The more you read, the more you know

READATHON is an annual, nationwide literacy promotion initiative executed by the National Department of Education and READ Educational Trust. Sponsored by the Nedbank Foundation, READATHON aims to develop a culture of reading in South Africa and to highlight the importance of literacy. Through a national literacy competition and the distribution of READATHON teacher’s handbooks to 26 000 South African schools, READATHON promotes reading in its widest sense.

READ 2009

The 2009 Readathon highlights the many different ways that we can gather knowledge about ourselves, our communities, our various culture, ethics and values. Not surprisingly, therefore, the 2009 Readathon focuses on stimulating learners to acquire knowledge from a multitude of different sources.

The learners will source their community to obtain facts, understanding and empathy from the elders in their community, from community leaders and from the lives of outstanding men and women in the community. In addition to speaking to people in their community, the learners are also encouraged to source print and electronic media about people who inspire the lives of others and to write about them.

The Readathon posters will help to develop learners’  information skills by challenging them to find their own amazing information from the people they know (their families, elders, people in the community who know their history and traditions) and from people in the community who know about animals, farming, medicine, plants, crafts, art, science, maths, sport, etc. These activities will stimulate the learners’ wonder and curiosity about the marvelous planet that we inhabit and will expand their abilities to use reference books to find and verify information.
