READ EDUCATIONAL TRUST – HONOURING MANDELA’S PURSUIT OF LITERACY FOR ALL

. READ Educational Trust is pleased to honour the father of our nation … the role model to which we all aspire … the late Nelson Mandela, in the month of his birth. A leader of note, Mandela was known for practising what he preached, promoting upliftment for all South Africans, and encouraging education and literacy whenever he could. Indeed, our history with Mandela goes back over two decades, to 1996, when he was the patron of READ. In that year, he endorsed the Readathon campaign, and fully supported that year’s theme: “A nation will never go hungry if it learns to do just one thing: READ.” Food for thought! Not only is READ encouraging literacy by giving away 18 sought-after Red Reading Boxes on all social media platforms throughout July; we will be participating in Mandela Week activities at the Villa of Hope Child and Youth Care Centre in Nancefield, Johannesburg. This centre plays a prominent role in meeting the needs of the nearby communities of Eldorado Park, Bushkoppies and Slovo Park informal settlement. The Villa of Hope will be hosting an education celebration on the 21st and 22nd July during the Mandela Week festivities. They will be inviting the community to this event which will include a Maths and Science fair, career guidance, counselling and so much more, specially aimed at those learners in Grade 7, through to the adults. READ will support this initiative with one of our popular pop-up libraries, during which Mrs Book will be reading to the community. This will take place on both days. In this way, we believe we’re helping to continue the Mandela legacy of dignity … and literacy … for all! To find out more about our activities, visit www.read.org.za.
